Father Touzeau's Christmas Letter

Backpack Buddy Food Drive

NEXT PICK-UP DATE:

Wednesday October 23, 2025

After a hiatus, Sacred Heart Catholic Church has resumed our partnership with other Cherokee County area churches, to provide food for needy children here in Cherokee County during school breaks, such as Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Christmas and Spring Breaks.

Food insecurity is an official term used by the USDA and it refers to people who don’t have enough to eat and don’t know where their next meal is coming from. It is a big problem in the United States and over    13 million children in our country experience it annually.  Unfortunately Cherokee County is no stranger  to food insecurity.

Sacred Heart Parishioners have always generously supported this community wide project.

So as a refresher, and for those who may not have been part of our Parish when we participated in this much needed endeavor before, our contributions will be picked up probably 4-5 times a year. The food will be sorted and organized, then distributed to Cherokee County Students through their schools, to help cover those times when they do not have access to school breakfast and lunch. For some children, school food may be their only source of sustenance.

Adult Education has Partnered with Sacred Heart Catholic Church to Provide ESL Classes

Adult Education has partnered with Sacred Heart Catholic Church to provide ESL classes at night. Dona Greer has assisted Janice Ford (the adult Education ESL instructor) with these classes.  SCAACE- the Adult Education Teachers Association- offers an opportunity for adult education instructors to write mini-grants to assist with instruction. Dona Greer saw a need for Oxford Picture Dictionaries that students can use over the summer and received one of the four $250 mini grants.

Adult Education will conclude ESL Classes on Monday night, May 2nd at 5:30 pm. We will present the church with the 9 dictionaries on this night.

Copied from Dona Greer’s mini-grant application:

The Cherokee County Adult Education (CCAE) Program established a partnership in with Sacred Heart Catholic Church based on the need for ESL Evening classes for its congregation and community. The Hispanic parishioners continue to grow and the church wants to provide a way to assist these limited English-speaking members. This partnership is a new endeavor for our program, and there is a large population that needs our services. The church provides the class space, which is a comfortable, safe, and familiar environment.

Our program has never experienced this amount of students who signed up for ESL Classes at one time. Our program purchased some books; however, we could not buy enough books to meet the needs of the class. Due to an increase in the number of students enrolled in the daytime ESL classes, books are needed for daytime classes and therefore, the ESL instructor can’t leave any additional books at the church. The ESL teacher must transport books, materials, and resources from our main ESL site to our evening satellite site. This is a burden on the instructor.

We have an influx of non-English speaking or limited English speaking population in our community. It is the desire of the CCAE program to assist students in overcoming barriers in order to become successful students, parents, employees, and community members. By having adequate materials at this new site, we can invest in our students in a way that will impact their future. This class may change the outcome of their life and provide a ripple effect in their family and the community.
